Land Acquisition
Wish we had a dollar for every time someone has made an observation
about “more and more lights” in the valley. There is no doubt that the
agricultural character of the San Luis Valley is changing: more forty-acre
parcels, more houses, more yard lights.
The Orient Land Trust Board has purchased
the neighboring ranch west of Valley View Hot Springs known as the Everson Ranch.
Historically, Valley View Hot Springs was a part of this ranch until 1979 when
Neil and Terry bought the hot springs. The hot spring water still irrigates the
pastures there. Recently, about half of the ranch was divided into parcels and
put on the market. Part of the mission of Orient Land Trust is to preserve land
in this area of Saguache County. Given the historical and practical connections,
the Board felt that acquiring and
preserving this ranch was in line with Orient Land Trust goals.
Since the land was subdivided and the lots offered for
sale, the price of the land was very high. Over the next few years Orient Land
Trust will need to raise $850,000 to pay for the ranch.
